Adopt Mangabey 'Peace'

Adoptions are available as a either monthly (£5.00/month) or a one time payment for 6 months (£25.00) or 12 months (£50.00). PEACE'S STORY: 'Peace' was donated anonymously - the donor sent a text message to our Education Officer, Jerry Akparawa, who went to collect her - 'Peace' is an orphan like all incoming monkeys - her mother was killed for bushmeat and 'Peace', who would have been clinging on to her, was then sold as a pet. Typically, most unlucky orphans are in poor physical condition on arrival, but' Peace' was an exception, so must have had some reasonable care. Even so, all incoming orphans must go through a mandatory three months quarantine before joining other mangabeys. From the first day 'Peace' arrived, it was obvious that she was very used to people. From the beginning she liked to cuddle up and took to the milk feeding bottle immediately. 'Peace' was very needy for attention while in quarantine, and soon became everyone’s favourite. As she was very used to human attention before her arrival, her transition from quarantine to joining a group was very difficult for her - she lacked essential 'monkey skills'. After several false starts we introduced her to a single adult female (Nya, who arrived as an orphan in 2001 and had recently been separated from her group as she was very low ranking and having a difficult time). A gentle and quiet female, she was just the one to teach 'Peace' monkey manners. 'Peace' and 'Nya' have since been integrated into a new group with an adult male, 'Callistus', juvenile female 'Marley' and female 'Mercy'. It is of course illegal to keep monkeys as pets, although the law is rarely enforced. At CERCOPAN we work hard to get this message across to the general public.
