Biodiversity Research
At CERCOPAN we have been collecting
information on the incredible biodiversity of Rhoko forests for several
years with the help of visiting experts. We now have partial
species lists for reptiles, amphibians, birds and butterflies. The
endangered Bufo superciliaris (pictured left) is one of 59
reptiles and amphibians identified at Rhoko, including one
new-to-science species.
A network of 12 transects (below left) with a 50 hectare grid system marked
centrally facilitates all research at Rhoko. The bright green area is
known as the 'Core Area' and the pale green as the 'Research Area'
(although research is carried out in both areas). These areas are
protected under agreement with Iko Esai
community. The Core Area is fully protected and managed completely
by CERCOPAN, patrolled day and night by our forest patrol staff who also
carry out routine wildlife monitoring. In the jointly managed Research Area, economically important non-timber forest products are
collected by Iko Esai people, while farming, logging or opening of new
roads is prohibited.
