Sclater's guenon range in Nigeria
(map from Baker & Olubode, in press) |
More About Sclater's
Guenon
Sclater’s guenon has been confirmed near the left bank of the Niger
River at 5º39'N, 6º39'E and near the right bank of Cross River at
5º22'N, 8º04'E (Oates & Anadu, 1989; Oates et al., 1992). It also occurs
in coastal freshwater swamp forest (Gadsby, 1989; Tooze, 1995) and
freshwater swamp forest located just inland from coastal mangroves
(Powell, 1995; Tooze, 1996; Baker & Olubode, in press). In a 2004
survey, the species was found as far northeast as 6º16'N, 8º11'E, in
gallery forest in a derived savanna zone (Baker & Olubode, in press).
Though now rare or absent across much of its presumed original range
because of regional habitat loss, Sclater’s guenon is still relatively
common. In one survey C. sclateri was one of the two most
frequently encountered primates (Baker & Olubode, in press). In a
community where the species is considered sacred (Lagwa, Imo State), the
population in 2005 was estimated to be 124 individuals in 15 troops;
density = 15 individuals/km2
(Baker, 2006). In another sacred site (Akpugoeze, Enugu State), a 2006
population estimate was 193 individuals in 20 troops; density = 35
individuals/km2
(Baker, 2006). This is similar to a
previous estimate for this population of 199 individuals in 12 troops
(Tooze, 1994). However, even where C. sclateri is held as sacred,
the traditional beliefs that confer protection on the monkeys are
eroding, and the habitat available to the monkeys is already small and
declining (Oates et al., 1992; Tooze, 1994). |
