The Tree
Platform arrives at Rhoko!
An aluminium tree platform provided
by Greenheart Conservation Company arrived in Nigeria from Canada earlier this
year. The logistics of shipping it to its destination in the community forest at
Rhoko were complicated (and expensive!), but with financial assistance from
A. G. Leventis Foundation, logistical support from
Bristow Helicopters
Nigeria Ltd, a generous helping of patience, and a lot of hard work, it finally
arrived at Rhoko. Erected by volunteer and expert tree climber Darryl Birch, and
a local team trained by Greenheart and provided by the
Cross
River State Tourism Bureau, the platform is some 30m high in the rainforest
canopy. Positioned on a ridge above the Rhoko River, it affords an excellent
opportunity for
bird watching
and magnificent view of the canopy 25 minutes walk from our guest accommodation.
If you are lucky, you might also see monkeys leaping about the trees below you.
Rhoko is only 3 hours from Calabar
by vehicle, so in less than 4 hours you could be sitting 30m high in the
rainforest canopy! Shown here in various stages of construction, when fully
complete it will also be used for overnight stays - both for researchers and for
ecotourists who want a different challenge (!) - as well as for educational
excursions.
